Kap Ocean Team had the pleasure to attend the Federal Communications Commission (“FCC”) and the National Science Foundation (“NSF”) Artificial Intelligence Workshop on July 13, 2023, at FCC Headquarters, in Washington DC.
This half-day workshop included network operators and vendors, leading academics, federal agencies, and public-interest representatives, to discuss the promise and challenge of artificial intelligence (AI) in the telecommunications and technology sectors.
Opening remarks were made by FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel, FCC Commissioner Nathan Simington, and NSF Director Dr. Sethuraman Panchanathan. The workshop was filled with optimism about AI potential in communication networks and generally. It was discussed that AI can improve spectrum management by providing insight into large and complex datasets. Moreover, it was discussed that AI has actually been in development for decades. Collaboration between the FCC and the NSF driving AI innovation was one of the key points. Impact of possible regulations for AI standards development and accountability were also discussed.
Keynote address was given by Dr. Margaret Martonosi, Assistant Director for Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering, NSF. She spoke about cross sector partnerships fueling programs and continued investments in AI. She discussed how the nation’s STEM enterprise can build upon foundational AI Research that makes AI more accurate, trustworthy and safe.
First panel session discussed AI’s Dramatic Impact on Communications Networks and Technologies. The first panel session included representatives from Ohio State University, Northwestern University. Erricson/Cradlepoint, Intel, and Public Knowledge.
FCC Commissioner Geoffrey Starks gave remarks after the first panel session. Second panel session discussed AI as a Tool and Challenge for Consumer Empowerment. This session had representatives from National Institute of Standards and Technology, TNS, Mckinsey & Company, National Urban League, and American Association of People with Disabilities.
The workshop covered a wide range of issues, including AI’s transformative potential to optimize network traffic; improving spectrum policy and facilitate sharing; and enhancing resiliency through self-healing networks. The workshop also explored how AI will affect the fight against robocalls and robotexts; efforts to foster digital equity and combat discrimination; and initiatives to bring greater transparency and affordability to broadband access.
Thank you FCC and NSF for an insightful workshop in AI.
