ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE GENERATED CONTENT & NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF STANDARDS AND TECHNOLOGY: LATEST NEWS IN APRIL 2024

The US Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology announced new actions to implement White House’s Executive Order on Artificial Intelligence on April 29, 2024.

These actions include: 1) draft guidance documents, 2) a draft plan for international standards, and 3) a new measurement program opening for public comment. In particular, NIST announced a new program, NIST Gen AI, to analyze Generative AI and identify AI generated content.

EUROPEAN UNION PASSES LANDMARK ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE ACT IN MARCH 2024

4/22/2024

European Union approved this significant Artificial Intelligence Act on March 13, 2024. According to European Parliament News, the following were the focus areas of this AI Act:

Safeguards on general purpose artificial intelligence
Limits on the use of biometric identification systems by law enforcement
Bans on social scoring and AI used to manipulate or exploit user vulnerabilities
Right of consumers to launch complaints and receive meaningful explanations

The law is to be finally adopted by the end of legislature and most will be fully applicable 24 months after its entry into force, with some exceptions.

Kap Ocean Team had the pleasure to attend annual National Science Board (NSB) 487th meeting (Day 1) in Washington DC on Feb 21, 2024 at National Science Foundation.

- In the Annual Meeting, NSF’s Role in the Future of Artificial Intelligence (AI) was discussed. There was a focus on: 1) National AI Research Institutes; 2) Implementing the Executive Order on Safe, Secure and Trustworthy Development and Use of AI; and 3) Challenges Moving Forward.

- NSB is the policymaking body for the National Science Foundation, an independent federal agency that funds basic research conducted by U.S. colleges and universities.

2024 GLOBAL SEMICONDUCTOR INDUSTRY EVENT AND REPORT

Kap Ocean Team had the pleasure to attend the event: “Assessing India’s Readiness to Compete in Global Semiconductor Value Chains” in Washington DC on February 22, 2024.

The event was held by Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF) with an expert panel discussion about ITIF’s final report assessing India’s readiness to assume a greater role in global semiconductor value chains. There was great optimism about how United States and India can collaborate and learn from each other as strategic partners.
