USPTO recently announced Inventorship Guidance for Artificial Intelligence Assisted Inventions. The Guidance provides information on: 1) How the Office will handle AI assisted inventions, 2) Details on how a person must make a “significant contribution” to the invention, and 3) more.

2024: HEALTHCARE AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Kap Ocean Team had the pleasure to attend events surrounding 42nd Annual J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference in San Francisco from January 8 to 11, 2024.

There was great excitement in Healthcare and Innovation events, including symposiums, networking sessions and receptions. Many events were happening in various venues in San Francisco Bay Area. As such, we experienced the outdoors in San Francisco in both January rainy and non-rainy days, while walking from one event to another.

The conference and events focused on informative Health Care Investment and Innovation Trends. There was definitely a focus on Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare. It was also great to attend many Policy and Regulatory symposiums in Healthcare.

Here are some takeaways that were heard from a variety of speakers, panelists and attendees of the conference and events.

1. Payor and Provider Technology Solutions in Healthcare were high in demand. AI solutions will continue to be of top interest in 2024. Robotics and digital health were also topics of excitement. AI and computing tools to expand drug discovery were also discussed.

2. There were many AI and Healthcare events. Topics of discussion also included AI privacy, training, bias, transparency and more.

3. Med Tech space still remains strong. There will be activity but “wait and see” approach might be taken into account.

4. Interest in Behavior Health continues. In particular, growth in outpatient psychiatry, applied behavior analysis/autism, and behavioral health pharmacies will grow.

5. There was a prediction of a recession in 2024. As the year goes on, news of companies restructurings might be heard of.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE CONFERENCE

Our team had the pleasure to attend AI DAY IV from AiiFy.io October 28, 2023 in Santa Clara (Silicon Valley)!

Aiify.io hosted speakers from leading AI companies, as well as early stage companies gaining traction. There were full day of panels, presentations, demos, and connection. There was exciting content in areas of customer service, education, art/design, media/music, privacy/security, literature, health/longevity, financial services, renewable energy, politics/governance, the legal industry, and more.

We met a range of AI experts and innovators, and gained insights that help craft AI strategy. We also saw how to harness the latest developments in AI to be more effective, creative, and competitive.

API World: We were joined by global technical leaders, engineers, software architects, and executives at this API & microservices event. API technologies empower developers & engineers to build upon the backbone of the market for API-driven products and services. Today’s cloud-based software and hardware runs on an open ecosystem of API-centric architecture, as per API conference details.

AI DevWorld: AI DevWorld is an artificial intelligence development event with tracks covering chatbots, machine learning, open source AI libraries, AI for the enterprise, and deep AI / neural networks. This conference targeted software engineers and data scientists, who are looking for an introduction to AI, as well as AI development professionals looking for a landscape view on the newest AI technologies.

Kap Ocean Team had the pleasure to attend the event, “From the Innovator's Workbench, with Beth McCombs” by Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign, in Silicon Valley, on October 25, 2023.

Beth Combs is the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Becton, Dickinson and Company, also known as BD. Beth leads end-to-end research and development for the organization. She's responsible for identifying customer needs and assembling an innovation portfolio, advancing new product development from early-stage concepts through commercialization, along with sustaining the current product portfolio.

Beth spoke talked about the CTO's role in identifying white spaces for innovation, the trends influencing BD's innovation agenda, and BD's approach to enabling health equity and sustainability. She shared lessons learned from more than two decades of leadership experience in medtech.

Below are some highlights:
- Artificial Intelligence can be used to get the right insights.
- Every product needs to be a differentiator, not just economical.
- Important forces shaping technology portfolios are macroeconomic and environmental. These include inflation and complexity of regulatory environment.

VENTURE CAPITAL NEWS

Kap Ocean Team had the pleasure to attend the event, “The State of Venture in Ohio ®” at Innovate New Albany, near Columbus, Ohio, on October 20, 2023.

This is an annual talk given by Lindsay Karas Stencel, held 6th year in a row. Lindsay provided updates about the status of VC funding in Ohio, discussed new venture fund formation. She also spoke about large exits, investments and places where the state can continue to develop and grow.

Below are some highlights, presented by Lindsay:
- Venture Capital (VC) is a 10 year horizon.
- Seed level companies have an average of 3 extensions of seed funding.
- Series B level of funding can have a growth stage from 100 to 1000 employees, for example.
- 0.5% of businesses get VC funding. Not all businesses need VC funding.

Below is more information about Ohio venture capital funding, presented by Lindsay:
- Ohio is an ecosystem, not a community, though Ohio is seeing improvements and maturity.
- Ohio may have insufficient early stage and growth capital.
- Ohio has highly concentrated funding sources
- Ohio is not ranking as fast as other mid-west markets, according to Pitchbook.

Lindsay gave an overall rank of status of VC funding in Ohio as B. But, she still likes to keep the FUN in FUND.

Kap Ocean Team had the pleasure to attend the event, “The Future of Communication and AI” at Innovate New Albany, near Columbus, Ohio, on September 27, 2023.

The event focused on the changing world of communications, including new technologies, AI, more ways to connect, and better methods for understanding data.

Below are some highlights presented by the Speaker, Bill Balderaz:
1. AI is not a substitute for Humanity.
2. What is the difference between AI and an algorithm?
Algorithm identifies a set of rules and solves for those rules. AI, or Neural Networks, think and train based on a large body of data to create conclusions.
3. When does a neural network get to be the size of a human brain?
Around 2040.

The event allowed the attendees to grasp the basics of AI in communication and make the most of various communication channels.

AI and FastAPI*: Wesley Giles discussed Dynamic Language talk to implement an AI within a FastAPI application.

Memory in LangChain*: Evelyn Boettcher talked about how LangChain can be used to give your ChatGPT memory within your application.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is generally defined as computing devices or systems that perform human-like behavior and thinking.

Machine Learning (ML) is a subset of artificial intelligence involving developing algorithms that can learn from data, and make predictions or decisions.

Deep Learning (DL) is a type of machine learning that uses neural networks with multiple layers to learn and make predictions.

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a subfield of AI that focuses on enabling computers to understand, interpret, and generate human language.

API stands for application programming interface, which is a set of definitions and protocols for building and integrating application software.1

FastAPI is a software framework for developing web applications in Python. Specifically, it is a modern, fast (high-performance), web framework for building APIs with Python 3.7+ based on standard Python type hints.2

LangChain is a framework for developing applications powered by language models.3
