Kap Ocean Team had the pleasure to attend the event, “Navigating the Fast-Paced World of AI” at Launch Dayton Startup Week in Dayton, Ohio on September 14, 2023.

In the event, AI leaders in Dayton discussed how the field is shifting and how those shifts will change how we live and do business. Opportunities for hungry, innovative founders was also discussed.

Many aspects for AI were mentioned by the panelists including usage of ChaptGPT, types of large data sets and fine tuning of data sets. Ethical safeguards and policies were also discussed. Hallucinations were also touched upon. In the world of AI, a hallucination is a confident response by an AI that does not seem to be justified by its training data, according to Wikipedia.

OHIO ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE FORUM

Kap Ocean Team had the pleasure to attend the Ohio Artificial Intelligence (AI) Forum on August 2, 2023, in Cincinnati, Ohio. The event was presented by OhioX + InnovateOhio. The purpose of the forum was to discuss the transformative impact of AI on Ohio. The forum explored how our educators, companies, and ideas will shape the future of the Buckeye State.

Featured Speakers included Lt. Governor Jon Husted; Dr. Neville G. Pinto, President at University of Cincinnati; Mike Venerable, President and CEO at CincyTech and Pete Blackshaw; President and CEO at Cintrifuse.

Lt. Governor Husted explained that he wanted to keep innovation going in Ohio. Lt Governor also mentioned that AI was used in general assembly to identify ways to eliminate 2.9 million words of regulatory code in State of Ohio and to move in person and paper process to digital ones. This resulted in saving millions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of hours, the Lt. Governor said. Work Collaboration for a force of good was also mentioned. One of the points was to rebuild startup economy and policy for investment in companies in Ohio. It was explained that Cincytech has around 10 companies which are AI focused.

Founders of companies from Ohio made presentations regarding their AI innovation and productions. These companies were from Voxel, Narratize, and Native.

The topic of the first panel was AI in Industry, Business and Economic Development. Moderator was Chris Berry at OhioX. Speakers included representatives from 84.51˚, Fifth Third Bank, Procter & Gamble, Microsoft and Total Quality Logistics. It was discussed that AI can drive increased access, bridge gaps and become less scary for people.

The second panel was titled AI in Education and Workforce. Lt. Governor Husted was the moderator. Speakers included professors from Miami University and University of Cincinnati. Other speakers included representatives from KPMG, AWS, and from Cincinnati Children's Hospital. The panel discussed empowering Ohioans for school and education purposes. One common theme was talent and needing the best minds in Ohio. The panel also focused on prompt engineering while pointing out that you have to learn how to ask good questions.

FCC AND NSF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE WORKSHOP

Kap Ocean Team had the pleasure to attend the Federal Communications Commission (“FCC”) and the National Science Foundation (“NSF”) Artificial Intelligence Workshop on July 13, 2023, at FCC Headquarters, in Washington DC.

This half-day workshop included network operators and vendors, leading academics, federal agencies, and public-interest representatives, to discuss the promise and challenge of artificial intelligence (AI) in the telecommunications and technology sectors.

Opening remarks were made by FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel, FCC Commissioner Nathan Simington, and NSF Director Dr. Sethuraman Panchanathan. The workshop was filled with optimism about AI potential in communication networks and generally. It was discussed that AI can improve spectrum management by providing insight into large and complex datasets. Moreover, it was discussed that AI has actually been in development for decades. Collaboration between the FCC and the NSF driving AI innovation was one of the key points. Impact of possible regulations for AI standards development and accountability were also discussed.

Keynote address was given by Dr. Margaret Martonosi, Assistant Director for Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering, NSF. She spoke about cross sector partnerships fueling programs and continued investments in AI. She discussed how the nation’s STEM enterprise can build upon foundational AI Research that makes AI more accurate, trustworthy and safe.

First panel session discussed AI’s Dramatic Impact on Communications Networks and Technologies. The first panel session included representatives from Ohio State University, Northwestern University. Erricson/Cradlepoint, Intel, and Public Knowledge.
FCC Commissioner Geoffrey Starks gave remarks after the first panel session. Second panel session discussed AI as a Tool and Challenge for Consumer Empowerment. This session had representatives from National Institute of Standards and Technology, TNS, Mckinsey & Company, National Urban League, and American Association of People with Disabilities.

The workshop covered a wide range of issues, including AI’s transformative potential to optimize network traffic; improving spectrum policy and facilitate sharing; and enhancing resiliency through self-healing networks. The workshop also explored how AI will affect the fight against robocalls and robotexts; efforts to foster digital equity and combat discrimination; and initiatives to bring greater transparency and affordability to broadband access.

Kap Ocean Team was delighted to learn about Spiking Neural Networks (SNN) at Gem City Machine Learning Group in Dayton, Ohio on June 15, 2023. This is an exciting area in machine learning, and generally in artificial intelligence.

The talk was given by Dr. Jeff Clark from RedPoint AI. According to the talk, SNN has the potential to have lower latency and be more computationally efficient. SNN are biologically inspired model and are considered a hybrid of neuroscience and machine learning. Thank you Gem City Machine Learning Group!

Kap Ocean Team attended Ohio Life Sciences (OLS) Advocacy Day on May 23 2023.

It was exciting to attend the first annual Life Sciences Advocacy Day in the Ohio Statehouse Rotunda.

It was a great opportunity to meet and speak with State Representatives and Senators about the importance of supporting and funding the life sciences. Kap Ocean team spoke directly with Legislators. Advocacy day focused on the impact that OLS and life sciences has on the State of Ohio.

Great Facts from OLS: The Life Sciences industry employs almost 84,000 Ohioans and attracted $3.5 billion in funding in 2021.

Kap Ocean Team attended Ohio Life Sciences Networking & Education Meeting in Cincinnati on May 17 2023.

This networking & education event was hosted by Ohio Life Sciences (OLS), in partnership with University of Cincinnati, CincyTech, and REDI Cincinnati, with support from Fisher Scientific, Wright Brothers Global Gas, and Vendor Managed Gas.

Kap Ocean team learned that OLS is activating life sciences workforce strategy. According to OLS, "The strategy includes 22 initiatives organized into four pillars: catalyzing industry-education partnerships, aligning education offerings with industry needs, improving public awareness of life sciences careers, and empowering life sciences employers to compete for talent."

It was a great gathering with a focus on opportunities, workforce development, and ways everyone can get involved.

ChatGPT AND Big AI INSIGHTS & EVENTS

Kap Ocean Team attended Innovate New Albany Event, Beyond ChatGPT: Threats and Opportunities of Big AI on March 17, 2023 and April 5, 2023. We learned a lot about ChatGPT, Big AI and applications.

ChatGPT was developed by OpenAI and initially released in November 2022. ChatGPT can be used to generate content using AI. ChatGPT utilizes Natural Language Processing. There are different neural network architectures to do different tasks within ChatGPT. The newest version of ChatGPT is GPT-4.
